The science is clear: the benefits of retinoids aren't limited to facial application. When used on the body, vitamin A works just as effectively to:

Understanding and treating keratosis pilaris: Strawberry skin

Understanding and treating keratosis pilaris: Strawberry skin

If you've ever noticed small, rough bumps on your skin that resemble goosebumps or chicken skin, you might be dealing with keratosis pilaris (KP). This common, harmless skin condition, also known as strawberry skin on social media, affects up to 40% of adults and is even more common in teenagers. While it may be frustrating, understanding KP is the first step toward managing it.

What is keratosis pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris occurs when hair follicles become plugged with keratin, a protein found in skin, hair, and nails. This buildup creates small, painless bumps that typically appear on the upper arms, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes the cheeks. The bumps are often light-coloured but can also be red or brown, depending on your skin tone.

What causes keratosis pilaris?

The exact cause of KP isn't fully understood, but several factors contribute to its development:

  • Genetics: KP often runs in families
  • Associated conditions: It's more common in people with eczema or dry skin
  • Age: It typically appears in childhood and may worsen during puberty
  • Seasonal changes: Symptoms often worsen in winter when skin tends to be drier

How to treat keratosis pilaris

While there's no cure for keratosis pilaris, several treatments can improve its appearance:

  1. Moisturise regularly: Use thick, fragrance-free moisturisers immediately after bathing to lock in hydration.
  2. Gentle exfoliation: Products containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like lactic or glycolic acid can help remove dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of bumps.
  3. Keratolytic treatments: Creams containing urea or salicylic acid can help break down excess keratin.
  4. Prescription options: For more severe cases, dermatologists may prescribe retinoid creams to promote cell turnover.

The Miracle Fluid

On our quest for silky smooth skin from head to toe, we created The Miracle Fluid, a gently exfoliating and hydrating face + body serum. The fragrance-free, lightweight formula features face-grade ingredients for full body results, including mandelic + lactobionic acid, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, vitamin E and French indirubin, which naturally provides the serum’s pink hue. The innovative blend gently exfoliates dead skin cells, minimising the occurrence of clogged pores, ingrown hair and also keratosis pilaris, while providing hydration. The result? Miraculously smoother skin.

Tips for Managing KP

  • Take shorter, cooler showers to prevent skin from drying out
  • Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers
  • Avoid scratching or picking at the bumps
  • Consider using a humidifier in dry environments
  • Be patient – improvements may take weeks or months to become visible

A MANTLE routine for super-smooth skin

Step 1: Before showering, exfoliate your body with The Hot Ex, our warming body exfoliator, to get rid of dead skin cells and buildup that may be clogging your pores.

Step 2: After drying off, apply The Miracle Fluid all over your body. With its transformative blend of lactobionic + mandelic acid it gently exfoliates, revealing smoother, more even skin.

Step 3: Lock in hydration and soften your skin with a cocooning body moisturiser. We suggest The Whipp, our award-winning body moisturiser.

The skin barrier: what is it, and why do you need to take care of it?

The skin barrier: what is it, and why do you need to take care of it?

Have you ever wondered why your skin sometimes feels dry, irritated, or just not quite right? It might be because your skin barrier is compromised. The skin barrier is like a protective shield, sitting on the outermost layer of your skin, the stratum corneum. It’s made up of dead skin cells and lipids that work together to keep moisture in and harmful stuff out. When everything is working as it should, your skin stays hydrated, healthy, and glowing. But when this barrier gets damaged, it can lead to dryness, redness, and increased sensitivity.

Is your skin barrier compromised?

So, what causes a compromised skin barrier? Lots of things. Harsh skincare products, environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays, and even lifestyle factors like stress and diet can take a toll. When the skin barrier is weakened, it can't protect you as effectively, leading to various skin issues and even chronic conditions like eczema.

Meet The Barrier Cream

Which is why we created The Barrier Cream. This barrier-building facial moisturiser is designed with biomimetic ingredients and prebiotics to restore and strengthen your skin. Packed with everything your skin needs to bounce back and stay strong, it replenishes and restores even the most sensitive and irritated of skin.

What makes The Barrier Cream so special? It’s all in the ingredients. We’ve combined ceramides, cholesterol, hyaluronic acid, inulin, and our unique mBarrier™ Complex to create a powerhouse formula. Ceramides and cholesterol are natural lipids that help maintain the skin’s structure and retain moisture. Hyaluronic acid is a hydrating hero, drawing water into the skin to keep it plump and smooth. And inulin, a prebiotic, helps balance your skin’s microbiome, which is crucial for a healthy barrier.

We created our own complex

Our mBarrier™ Complex takes things to the next level. Designed to mimic the skin’s natural processes, it elevates the skin’s defence by neutralising free radicals and features plant-based adaptogens to uniquely support the skin's natural ability to adapt to stress and achieve balance.

Do you have sensitive skin?

The best part? The Barrier Cream is gentle enough for even the most sensitive and compromised skin types. Whether your skin is dry, irritated, or just in need of some TLC, it provides deep hydration, balance, and nourishment without any irritation. Use it daily, and you’ll start to see and feel the difference as your skin becomes more resilient and healthier over time.

In a nutshell, maintaining a healthy skin barrier is key to preventing moisture loss and protecting against external irritants. The Barrier Cream doesn’t just offer quick relief for compromised skin; it builds long-term resilience, keeping your skin hydrated, balanced, and protected.

Jellyfish mucin: skincare innovation

Jellyfish mucin: skincare innovation

In the ever-evolving world of skincare, new, innovative ingredients are always popping up, promising to revolutionise our beauty routines. One such game-changer is jellyfish mucin. Known for its incredible hydrating properties, jellyfish mucin is quickly becoming a must-have in the quest for radiant, healthy skin. But how does it stack up against the long-time favourite, snail mucin? And what makes our newest arrival, The Hydra Serum, featuring jellyfish mucin, a standout?

The Benefits of jellyfish mucin in skincare

Jellyfish mucin is a super hydrator. Derived from the mucous secreted by jellyfish, this ingredient is loaded with glycoproteins and polysaccharides, which are essential for keeping your skin moisturised and balanced. Here’s why you should consider adding jellyfish mucin to your skincare routine:

Intense hydration: Jellyfish mucin is amazing at attracting and holding onto moisture. It forms a protective barrier on your skin, locking in hydration and keeping your complexion soft and supple.

Radiant glow: Packed with antioxidants, jellyfish mucin helps fight off the free radicals that can make your skin look tired and dull. Plus, it boosts collagen production, which means firmer, smoother skin.

Skin repair: Jellyfish mucin encourages skin cell regeneration, helping to repair damage and improve the overall texture of your skin. This is great for anyone dealing with scars, blemishes, or sun damage.

Soothing power: Thanks to its natural anti-inflammatory properties, jellyfish mucin can calm irritated skin and reduce redness, making it perfect for sensitive skin types.

Jellyfish mucin vs. snail mucin

Snail mucin has been a beloved ingredient in the skincare world for years, known for its healing and hydrating abilities. But jellyfish mucin offers some unique benefits:

Hydration: While both are great for hydration, jellyfish mucin’s unique structure allows for deeper and longer-lasting moisture. This makes it especially effective for dry or dehydrated skin.

Barrier boost: Jellyfish mucin is exceptional at strengthening the skin barrier, protecting against environmental stressors and preventing moisture loss more effectively than snail mucin.

Skin firmness: While snail mucin also helps with skin firmness, jellyfish mucin has a higher concentration of peptides, delivering more noticeable results.

Introducing The Hydra Serum: next-level hydration

Meet our newest arrival: The Hydra Serum. This innovative serum uses the power of jellyfish mucin to hydrate, replenish and balance your skin. Formulated with a blend of jellyfish mucin and deep-sea algae, which make up our mPelagic2TM Complex, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and blue malachite extract, it bathes your skin in deep hydration, boosts resilience against environmental stressors, and strengthens the skin barrier.

The mPelagic2TM Complex

To ensure maximal hydration, we’ve created and trademarked the mPelagic2TM Complex. The combination of ultra-hydrating + collagen boosting jellyfish mucin and mineral + antioxidant rich deep-sea arctic algae creates a complex that strengthens and hydrates the skin on a whole new level.

Jellyfish mucin is an exciting addition to the skincare world, offering superior hydration, glow-boosting, and skin-repairing benefits. The Hydra Serum takes full advantage of this powerhouse ingredient, delivering next-level hydration and overall skin health. Dive into the future of skincare with The Hydra Serum and experience the transformative power of jellyfish mucin for yourself.

Hydration and Moisture: What's the difference?

5 / 27
Hydration and Moisture: What's the difference?

In skincare, the terms "hydration" and "moisture" are often used interchangeably, yet they are in fact quite different. Understanding the difference is crucial for maintaining optimal skin health, especially when addressing surface dry, dry, sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Hydration vs. Moisture

Hydration refers to the water content within the skin cells. Hydrated skin is plump, elastic, and smooth. Hydrating ingredients, aka humectants, like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera, attract and bind water to the skin, ensuring the cells are well-supplied with the hydration they need to function correctly.

Moisture, on the other hand, is about locking in that hydration to prevent water loss. Moisturising ingredients, such as oils, butters, and occlusives, create a barrier on the skin’s surface. This barrier helps retain hydration and protects the skin from environmental stressors and dehydration.

Hydration before moisture

Applying hydrating products before moisturising ones is vital when it comes to achieving your skin goals. Hydrating serums and essences replenish the water content in the skin. Following up with a moisturiser helps to lock in that hydration, preventing it from evaporating and ensuring long-lasting hydration.

Skipping the hydration step can lead to a superficial application of moisture, where the skin might feel temporarily soft but lacks the deep hydration necessary for long-term health. Moisturisers alone can't pull in water; they need the hydrating layer beneath to be most effective.

Surface Dryness vs. Dryness

Surface dryness is often characterised by flaky skin that feels tight and uncomfortable. Even if you have acne-prone or oily skin, you can suffer from surface-dryness. By applying hydrating products that can penetrate the skin to plump it up you can minimise the symptoms, or even get rid of surface dryness all together. Next, depending on your skin type, you want to lock in that hydration with a moisturiser. A lighter one formula, like The Face Jelly, if you are acne-prone, or a slightly richer one if your skin is more balanced, like The Chill Cream

Overall dryness, or true dry skin, indicates a lack of oil production. This type of dryness requires both hydrating and moisturising products, often in richer formulations (The Rich Cream for example), to restore balance and protect the skin.

Minimising surface-dryness

For those with surface dry skin, layering lightweight toners, and hydrating serums followed by a moisturiser can do wonders. We suggest:

Step 1: Spritz The Must Mist to prep, hydrate and tone your skin.

Step 2: Apply The Shroom Essence to the palms of your hands and pat into the skin for deeply penetrating hydration.

Step 3: Next, apply The Face Jelly, our non-comedogenic gel moisturiser.

A routine for dry skin

For those with overall dryness, a combination of hydrating serums and richer, more emollient moisturisers will be necessary. Including both steps in your skincare regimen ensures that your skin remains hydrated, plump, and resilient. We recommend:

Step 1: Cleanse with The Bare Balm, our deeply nourishing balm-cleanser.

Step 2: Tone with our hydrating toner, The Must Mist

Step 3: Apply a few drops of The Smoothing Serum to plump and hydrate.

Step 4: Finish of with The Rich Cream, our deeply moisturising face cream.

In conclusion, understanding the difference between hydration and moisture is fundamental for addressing various skin conditions. By prioritising hydration and following up with effective moisturising, you can maintain healthy, balanced skin, preventing both surface and overall dryness.

Meet bakuchiol

Meet bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is a plant-based skincare ingredient that has taken the cosmetic industry by storm. Extracted from the seeds of the babchi plant, bakuchiol is considered a natural alternative to retinol, with all the same benefits such as smoothing fine lines, stimulating collagen production, combatting pigmentation and boosting elasticity, but with the advantage of being tolerated by sensitive skin.

Quality matters

As bakuchiol grows in popularity, so does the number of knockoffs. Not all bakuchiol is created equal. Some bakuchiol on the market contains high amounts of sensitisers which can cause harmful side effects. The bakuchiol used in MANTLE products is one of the best on the market. It has > 99% purity which guarantees efficacy and safety for consumers. It is highly stable, ensuring maximal results with minimal irritation. Our bakuchiol has undergone rigorous studies to ensure its efficiency and safety and is supported by clinical data.

Bakuchiol in MANTLE products

Bakuchiol is incorporated into several of MANTLE's most popular formulas: The Glow Serum (1 %), The Chill Cream (0,5%) and The Dream Mask (0,5%).

The Glow Serum revives dull skin with a nourishing blend of bakuchiol and liquorice root extract, delivering smooth, even skin. The Chill Cream is a balancing 24h moisturiser designed to soothe and hydrate skin, minimising redness and irritation. Our hero, The Dream Mask, plumps, nourishes and hydrates skin while you sleep. With a blend of bakuchiol, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, it promotes cellular regeneration, plumps fine lines, minimises pores and deeply hydrates skin – all while you sleep.

Quench your thirst

Quench your thirst

Has your skin been feeling a little extra thirsty lately? Thankfully, our super-hydrating moisturiser, The Face Jelly, is finally back in stock. Here's what makes it the perfect addition to your summer skincare routine.

Take a sip

First, we need to establish the difference between hydration and moisture. Dehydrated skin happens when your skin is lacking in water, AKA hydration, and dry skin is when your skin is lacking in oil, AKA moisture. The Face Jelly is jam-packed with hyaluronic acid, a hydrating hero ingredient that penetrates the surface of the skin and helps bind up to 1000 times its weight in water, acting like a cool drink on a hot summer's day for your skin.

Juicy results

On top of the hyaluronic acid, we've added collagen-stimulating peptides, soothing centella and purifying chlorophyll. Together, these ingredients help to plump and pump the skin full of nutrients without it ever feeling heavy on the skin. The Face Jelly is completely non-comedogenic and water-based, meaning it doesn't clog your pores while delivering everything your skin needs to feel good in the summer sun.

Stay hydrated

Another summer-skin essential is The Must Mist, our multi-functional toning spray. Did you know that it is best to apply hydrating products on damp skin to better help them penetrate the skin and lock in moisture? This is why The Must Mist is so perfect. Try spritzing your face with it and then immediately applying The Face Jelly on top. It might feel a little wet to begin with, but trust us, your thirsty skin will feel perfectly quenched in no time.

Sea buckthorn extract

Sea buckthorn extract

One of our absolute favourite ingredients to incorporate into our formulas is sea buckthorn extract. Derived from the small orange berries that grow on the sea buckthorn plant, this incredible extract has a long list of skin-enhancing properties, such as the ability to reduce the effects of inflammation, strengthen the skin barrier and boost elasticity, among others.

Full of fatty acids

Sea buckthorn is rich in Omega 3, 6, 7 and 9, fatty acids that have a long list of skin benefits. Omega 3 facilitates better healing, provides rich hydration and boosts elasticity. Omega 6 has the ability to fight the effects of inflammation and is incredibly rich in antioxidants. Omega 7 has healing properties, helps skin regenerate and can calm eczema, psoriasis and acne. Omega 9 helps to strengthen the skin barrier by creating a hydrolipidic film, ensuring hydration and regeneration.

Sea buckthorn extract

Rich in vitamins

Highly concentrated in antioxidants, sea buckthorn extract contains an exceptional amount of vitamins A, C and E, which are highly effective in skin care products. Vitamin A is anti-infectious and essential for the general health of your skin. Vitamin E is antioxidant-rich and protects against free radicals. And Vitamin C regenerates + stimulates cells and protects against bacterial penetration.

Sea buckthorn extract

Excellent for sensitive skin

Sea buckthorn extract is also a real hero when it comes to sensitive skin. It promotes skin hydration and elasticity, helps treat and prevent acne, has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness and can calm eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. Which is why we have incorporated it into so many of our formulas. As far as natural ingredients go, sea buckthorn extract is the best there is. You can find it in The Rebound SerumThe Chill CreamThe Dream Mask, among others.

Get to know The Dream Hair

Get to know The Dream Hair

Have you hopped on the hair health bandwagon? Because we certainly have. While MANTLE is a skincare brand first and foremost, we have had a tendency to venture into other areas, such as body and intimate care. After receiving a flurry of requests for a version of our community-favourite The Dream Mask, but for your hair, we thought why not? And The Dream Hair was born.

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp

As most of us know, healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, and we believing in treating your scalp just as kindly as you treat your skin. The Dream Hair is formulated with super-hydrating hyaluronic acid, moisture-locking coconut fruit extract and gloss-giving broccoli seed oil. Together they provide your hair and scalp with deep nourishment and moisture, resulting in luscious lengths and healthy roots.

How to get your dream hair depending on hair type

Hair care can be tricky, as there are so many different hair types with different needs which is why The Dream Hair was designed to be versatile. For finer hair, we suggest using it as a pre-shampoo treatment. Massage it into your scalp and lengths and let sit for 15-30 mins. Then follow up with your regular hair care routine. Or apply it after shampooing, avoiding the scalp, as it may be too rich for fine hair.

Thick hair, very much do care

If your hair is on the thicker side, or your hair is damaged or dry from previous treatments, we recommend using The Dream Hair as a traditional hair mask. Apply to hair and scalp after shampooing, let sit for 5-10 minutes and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Follow up with conditioner if you need an extra dose of moisture.

Hitting the beach?

We can’t wait to hit the beach, but salty swims in combination with sun exposure can really damage your hair. Try applying The Dream Hair as a leave-in treatment before swimming to prevent your lengths from getting tangled, dry and damaged.

Discover The Dream Hair and hit the reset button on dry, lifeless hair. The hair of your dreams is just one mask away.

Lactobionic acid: What it is and what it does

Lactobionic acid: What it is and what it does

Lactobionic acid is an exfoliant under the polyhydroxy acid (PHA for short) umbrella. While chemically similar to AHA, lactobionic acid has a larger molecular structure, which means it doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply. This results in a gentler exfoliation with less risk of causing irritation, making it a great alternative for sensitive skin. Other benefits of this antioxidant-rich acid include its ability to protect skin from environmental stressors and its ability to help reduce redness and unevenness in skin tone. Lactobionic acid is also a powerful humectant, helping to draw and lock in moisture in the skin. What’s not to love?

A short guide to acids

There are several types of acids often used in skincare to provide exfoliation. These include AHA, BHA and PHA. Here is how they differ and which suits your skin best.

AHA: Similar to lactobionic acid, AHA has a smaller molecular structure which allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin and slough off dead, dull skin cells and fade dark spots. It is very hydrating, making it the most suitable acid for normal to dry skin. Common AHAs include glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid.

BHA: There is one main BHA, salicylic acid, and the terms are used interchangeably. In contrast to AHA, BHA is oil-soluble, making it the ideal acid for those with oily, congested or acne-prone skin. Its ability to minimise the appearance of blackheads and clear pores has made it a popular choice for those with enlarged pores.

PHA: While similar to AHA, PHA has a larger molecular structure, making it a more gentle exfoliant and therefore more suitable for sensitive skin. Being a humectant, it also provides a hydrating and plumping effect on the skin. Common PHAs include galactose and lactobionic acid.

Acids in MANTLE formulas

Never wanting to compromise the skin barrier our products are formulated to deliver results, without being harsh. In our clarifying matcha mask, The Green Mask we have incorporated 2% BHA to help unclog pores and decongest the skin while delivering radiance. Our multi-depth hydration fluid, The Shroom Essence, features PHA to provide an ultra-gentle exfoliation, hydration and a plumping effect on the skin. In The Miracle Mask, we have combined lactobionic acid with mandelic acid, to create a formula that effectively and instantly lifts dead skin cells without causing any irritation.
